Essex Tyler - Ceramics
Essex Tyler was born in Newlyn Cornwall in 1973. He studieded at the Penwith School of Art and later at Falmouth College.
The chance to attend a Raku pottery course at the Tate Gallery in St,Ives, and growing up surrounded by artists and potters and craftsman, inspired him to set up his own pottery in Newlyn. He now lives and works in Mousehole running the successful Tyler Gallery where he can often be seen creating his pots "en plein air" and he has a studio with views across to the Lizard Peninsular and the Mount.
Over the the last ten years he has exhibited widely, with a number of shows in Cornwall, Winchester, and Londons Sloane Square and Cork Street. His pots can be found in Private collections throughout the World.
The Cornish countryside and its surrounding sea have subconsciously influenced Essex Tyler and it is all aspects of these that are the subject matter of his pottery. Reflecting his nature and his natural environment, his pots are full of texture and balance. Cool glazes poured onto a rich and textured body. Turquoise blues, green and ochures settle each vessel with tranquility.
His approach can be soft or hard, classical or modern, but it is the simplicity of each piece that gives it the sense of wonder. The ideas he likes to express are pure and simple and the original natural spirit of Raku translates to each piece.
